Lot 83

1801 S-216 R1. PCGS graded MS-62 Brown. Lustrous tan and light steel brown mottled with darker steel brown toning on the obverse. Traces of mint red remain visible on both sides, about 5% of the obverse and at least 10% of the reverse showing mint color. The only notable marks are two small nicks over the eye and a few tiny ticks hidden in the hair left of the ear. The reverse is choice and the eye appeal of this cent is quite nice in spite of the uneven toning on the obverse. MDS, Breen state II, with dull die clashmarks on both sides and sharp dentils over STA without any hint of a rim cud in that area. The bust tip is well struck, which is a big plus for a variety that often comes with significant weakness in that area. Graded MS60 and tied for CC#3 in the Noyes census, his photo #35464. Bland says MS62 and tied for CC#4. Our grade is MS60+. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 1 finer in 63. (PCGS # 36245) Value $12,000 - UP
Ex An East Coast Collection (acquired at the convention in Baltimore 11/14/1998)-Douglas F. Bird Collection.
