Lot 73

1800 S-197 R1. PCGS graded MS-63 Brown. Lustrous medium steel and chocolate brown. A very attractive cent that is covered with mint frost. The only marks, and they are trivial, are a spot of lighter golden tan toning near the dentils left of the lower curls, some microscopic ticks in he field before the portrait, and a collection of microscopic ticks between the leaf tips over the N in ONE. Very late die state, Breen state IV late, with cracks and fine die rust on both sides. Narrow but clearly defined rim cud breaks are visible over the B in LIBERTY and over the AT and ES in STATES. The obverse of this cent is plated in Dr. Sheldon's Early American Cents and Penny Whimsy. Graded MS62 and CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #28741. Bland says AU55 and tied for CC#5. Our grade is MS60. Comes with a great provenance. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; none finer. (PCGS # 36179) Value $12,000 - UP
