Lot 65

1799/8 S-188 R4 Overdate 9 over 8. PCGS graded EF-40. Very attractive glossy medium chocolate brown and steel. Traces of mint frost show in protected areas and there are no traces of corrosion or verdigris. The only defects are some light contact marks scattered over both sides including several nicks in the field before the portrait, others inside the wreath, and a relatively strong vertical nick in the top of the E in STATES. Otherwise this cent would rate a slightly higher grade. MDS, Breen state III, with fine die clashmarks on both sides but no die cracks. Struck slightly off center to K-6 but the date is clear and the overdate feature is obvious. Graded VF25 and tied for CC#3 in the Noyes census, his photo #21286. Bland says VF25 as well but tied for CC#5 in his census. Our grade is VF25. This cent was displayed in the 1914 Exhibition of United States and Colonial Coins presented by the American Numismatic Society in January and February of that year, and this cent is included on Plate #22 in the catalog prepared for that event. (Note: Deceptive copies of this cent were made for collectors prior to 1963. See the note at the bottom of page 540 in the Breen large cent encyclopedia for more information.) A great example of this classic rarity, and it comes with a wonderful provenance. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 2 finer: 1 in 45, 1 in 58. (PCGS # 36131) Value $40,000 - UP
