Lot 434

1795 C-6b R6 No Pole, Thick Planchet G5. Mostly glossy medium brown and steel blending to olive brown and chocolate in protected areas. No verdigris or notable marks, essentially just worn. EDS, Manley state 1.0, without a bulge in the field right of the Y in LIBERTY. This piece was struck over a spoiled large cent and traces of the cent undertype are visible on the obverse. The AM from AMERICA is visible at the 1 in the date and the 00 from the denominator can be found at BE in LIBERTY. In addition there is an obvious arc of large cent dentils on the left edge of the obverse and in the opposing area on the left edge of the reverse. There is not sufficient undertype from the large cent to identify the date or die variety, but there is no question the undertype is from a spoiled cent. The date is weakly struck, as usual, but it is readable. A decent example of this very rare variety, and the visible undertype is a big plus. Weight 99.5 grains. Value $3,000 - UP
Acquired from an unrecorded source 6/1997-Mark Hayes 5/1/2015-The Widok Collection.

Realized $2,340
