Lot 430

1795 C-5b R4 No Pole, Thick Planchet. PCGS graded AU-55. Choice glossy medium brown and light chocolate with hints of very faded mint red remaining visible in some of the protected areas on both sides. The only marks are a small planchet chip at the top of the neck, a partial planchet cutter impression at the rim near the U in UNITED, and a tiny planchet flake over the E in AMERICA, all as struck. Nicely struck EDS with a hint of reflectivity in the fields on both sides. These thick planchet versions of the variety were struck on cut-down spoiled (or defective) large cent planchets, and finding an example without pre-striking flaws is quite difficult. As Breen states on page 150 in his encyclopedia, "These are crude, often defective with cracks, splits, and chips, and are thicker than normal. Weights range from 105.7 grains to 123 grains." This example weighs 111.2 grains (versus the 84.0-grain standard for the thin planchet version). Our grade is AU50. A great example of the thick planchet variety, second finest known to us. And it comes with a wonderful provenance. The attribution and Eliasberg-Widok provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer. (PCGS # 35086) Value $23,000 - UP
