Lot 42

1796 S-119 R3 Draped Bust. PCGS graded MS-63 Brown. Frosty uniform medium brown. Satiny mint luster covers the fields on both sides and this cent has excellent eye appeal. No spots or contact marks, but both sides show many of the tiny pre-striking planchet chips that are commonly associated with this die variety. Most of these chips are found on the devices while the fields are nearly flawless. The only notable planchet chip is a diagonal nick-like line left of the eye. LDS, Breen state III, with crumbling along the rim over AT in STATES that involves at least 7 dentils. Almost certainly from the famous "Nichols Hoard" of mint state cents. (The Nichols Hoard consisted of a large number of mint state cents, perhaps as many as 1000, dated 1796 and 1797 that were obtained directly from the mint in 1797, reportedly by Benjamin Goodhue, a member of the Continental Congress. These cents were passed down to his daughters and eventually came into the possession of David Nichols of Gallows Hill near Salem, Massachusetts, in the 1860's. Die varieties found in the hoard included 1796 S-119, and 1797 S-123 & 135.) Noyes photo #34209. Our grade is MS60+. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 5; 3 finer: 2 in 64, 1 in 65. (PCGS # 35870) Value $17,500 - UP
