Lot 36

1796 S-98 R4 Draped Bust. PCGS graded MS-63+ Brown. CAC. Glossy tan and light brown blending to light steel brown on the highpoints. Faded mint red shows in the protected areas covering about 10% of the planchet on both sides, and this cent has great eye appeal. The only defects are a spot of very fine carbon in the field left of the lower locks and some tiny planchet chips scattered over both sides (as struck). LDS, Breen state III, with a thick die crack from the dentils to the right top of the Y in LIBERTY and a fine diagonal crack through the top of the first A in AMERICA nearly reaching the adjacent M. Only 2 or 3 mint state examples of the variety are known (depending on the condition census you prefer), and the finest of those is impounded in the ANS collection. Graded MS62 and CC#2 behind the ANS coin in the Bland census. Noyes says MS60 and CC#3, his photo #21840. Our grade is MS60+. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer. Only 2 graded MS at PCGS. (PCGS # 35828) Value $60,000 - UP
