Lot 228

1826 N-7 R1. PCGS graded MS-64+ Brown. Lustrous light chocolate and steel brown with a few peeps of faded mint red showing through in protected areas of the obverse, but 20% of the original mint color remains visible on the reverse. There are a pair of dull, light marks on the upper cheek near the eye and a small spot of darker reddish brown toning high on the neck plus another in the field over star 13. Otherwise this piece is quite nice and the reverse is flawless. MDS with die clashmarks on both sides, and the ones on the reverse show an outline of Ms Liberty that is rotated 30 degrees clockwise from the normal head-to-foot die orientation present on this coin. This odd situation is noted in John Wright's discussion of this variety in his book on the middle date cent series, "The Cent Book." Called MS63 and tied for CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #20586. Bland says MS60+ and tied for CC#3. Our grade is MS63. Previously removed from a PCGS slab graded MS65BN (PCGS label #36829.65/13094621). The attribution and Great Pacific Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 6 finer: 4 in 65, 2 in 66. (PCGS # 36829) Value $3,000 - UP
