Goldberg Coins and Collectibles

Sale 115

Lot 1625

1859-S. NGC graded EF-45. Lightly toned on both sides. The surfaces are pleasing with smooth wear and minimal handling marks on the soft gold fields and devices. This is a vastly underrated issue. David Akers when discussing this date and mint noted it was "as rare as the famous 1858 or 1859-O issues". CoinFacts notes that about 45 are known today from the original mintage of only 7,000 struck. As such any offering of this date, especially in high grade like this EF-45, presents quite an opportunity for the gold eagle collector who is assembling an entire date and mint run. Pop 7; 17 finer at NGC. (PCGS # 8630) Value $4,000 - UP

Realized $6,240
