Lot 137

1810 S-285 R2. PCGS graded MS-65 Brown. Choice light olive and bluish steel brown with traces of faded mint red remaining visible on both sides, particularly on the reverse. The surfaces are satiny and this cent has great eye appeal. The only notable marks are a small planchet flake in the dentils below star 1 and another on the bust above the first 1 in the date (both as struck). Nicely struck E-MDS, Breen state II, with fine radial die flowlines in the fields and complete dentils around both sides. Graded MS63 Choice and tied for CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #34067. Bland says MS63 and tied for CC#2 as well. Our grade is MS63+, close to MS64. A wonderful Classic Head large cent. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer. (PCGS # 36484) Value $40,000 - UP
Ex Charles J. DuPont, Stack's (Anderson DuPont Sale) 9/24/1954:507-Gene Reale, Sotheby's 1/15/1998:48 (as MS66)-Douglas F. Bird Collection (includes both lot tickets).
