Lot 125

1807/6 S-272 R4+ Overdate Small 7 over 6. PCGS graded AU-55. Glossy chocolate and olive brown with underlying mint frost, especially on the reverse. The surfaces are smooth and quite glossy thanks in part to a very thin layer of "Care" or some similar protectant. Looks mint state but there is a trace of friction on the highest points of the devices. The only notable marks are a pair of small nicks high on the neck and a dull nick just right of the date. Sharply struck MDS, Breen state II, with fine die clashmarks on both sides. There are microscopic die polishing lines in the obverse fields and sharp pantograph lines on the portrait. The obverse is slightly misaligned to K-9 and the reverse is off center a bit to K-12. A sharp, very attractive example of this classic rarity in the early date series of large cents. It is graded AU50 in the Noyes and Bland census lists, and it has been recognized as the undisputed finest known example of the variety for more many decades. Noyes photo #20999. Our grade is AU50 as well. Both sides are plated in the 1934 Clapp reference on the cents of 1804-1814, Penny Whimsy, and the Noyes reference books. A "must-have" for the collector who wants the finest example of this "Redbook" rarity. And it comes with an outstanding provenance that has been traced back 100 years. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; none finer. (PCGS # 36439) Value $140,000 - UP
