Lot 1207

1872-CC. PCGS graded MS-60. A hint of light tone that is fairly uniform on both sides. The strike is reasonably sharp with reflective fields on both sides. This is a low mintage date with only 3,150 struck. What is truly remarkable is that this date survives in rather large numbers relative to its mintage. Q. David Bowers, noted authority in numismatics wrote in his Silver Dollars Encyclopedia from 1993 that "Today, the number surviving is in the range of perhaps 150 to 200, including lower grades in the Good, VG and Fine ranges." CoinFacts, while using their immense grading data from the PCGS Population Report and the NGC Census have now estimated that perhaps as many as 400 examples of these 1872-CC silver dollars exist, over ten percent of the original mintage. Granted, the majority are in quite low grades, but this is a date that is available in well worn condition. In high grades, like this Mint State coin, the rarity is notably less than a few dozen known. Pop 2; 10 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 6969) Value $14,000 - UP
