Lot 106

1803 S-249 R2 Corrected Fraction 100 over 000. PCGS graded MS-64 Brown. CAC. The final "Mumps" Obverse variety. Lustrous golden tan and light olive with subtle overtones of light bluish steel and sea-green on both sides. Nearly free of marks or other distractions. The best identifying marks are a pair of microscopic planchet chips in the field far above the upper end of the hair ribbon and another in the field far off the tip of the nose (all as struck), plus a small spot of light reddish brown toning hidden in the hair left of the forehead. Nicely struck EDS, Breen state II, with a subtle bulge in the field off the tip of the bust but no die cracks. (Note: This bulge is present on the latest examples of S-248, which was struck prior to S-249, and it is present on the earliest strikes of S-249.) The "Mumps" break at the throat is strong and the Corrected Fraction (100 over 000) is obvious to the unaided eye. Graded MS65 Choice and tied for CC#1 honors in the Noyes census, his photo #23049. Bland says MS64 and CC#2 behind a slightly finer example. Our grade is MS64. This is the Breen plate coin for the variety in his large cent encyclopedia. A beautiful cent and it comes with a wonderful provenance. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; none finer. (PCGS # 36416) Value $50,000 - UP
