Lot 104

1803 S-247 R3 "Mumps" Obverse. PCGS graded MS-62 Brown. Very attractive glossy medium brown and light chocolate with peeps of faded mint color showing on the obverse. The surfaces are perfectly smooth but there are a few marks. These include a puff of dark olive brown toning in the field off the end of the nose, another at the ends of the hair ribbon, a rim bruise opposite the neck, and a trail of microscopic ticks from the L into the hair above the ribbon. Otherwise this cent is choice and the reverse is flawless. E-MDS, Breen state I, with an uncracked reverse. The "Mumps" break at the throat and the clashed arc of dentils through the denominator are strong. Graded AU55 Choice and tied for CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #21380. Bland says AU55 and tied for CC#2. Our grade is AU50+. Both sides of this cent are plated in the 1925 Howard Newcomb reference on the cents of 1801-1803. Comes with a nice provenance. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer and the only MS graded at PCGS. (PCGS # 36359) Value $12,500 - UP
