Sale 112

Lot 332

1796 S-81 R3 Liberty Cap F12. Sharpness near VF30 but dark and covered with fine granularity under slightly glossy dark olive brown and steel toning. The only mark is a light diagonal scratch in the field left of the lower curls, and it blends perfectly into the toning. Sharply struck EDS, Breen state I, before any die cracks. ONE CENT is fully struck, which is unusual on this variety. In addition the planchet has a diameter of 30.5 millimeters, significantly larger than the normal 28.5mm. Breen mentioned seeing one example with this exact diameter (his large cent encyclopedia, page 273, Remarks section). This might be that coin. Estimate Value $1,200 - UP
Ex Jan Casagrande, 2007 EAC Sale, McCawley & Grellman Auctions 4/28/2007:163-Dr. Allan Pirnique (lot ticket included).
