Goldberg Coins and Collectibles

Sale 112

Lot 1196

1854-D. PCGS graded AU-50. Well struck with golden-orange mint luster adhering to the devices on both sides. Rare and always in demand as not only the first year of issue but the only Dalonega Mint $3.00 gold coin. Curiously despite a tiny mintage of only 1,120 struck, the survival rate for this date and mint is estimated to be around 300 pieces. Perhaps a much larger portion were saved as the first of their kind in 1854 when the $3 gold series was launched. The popularity of this date and mint never diminishes, hence these always bring a strong price when a nice example like this appears on the market. Pop 18; 49 finer at PCGS (PCGS # 7970) Estimate Value $20,000 - UP

Realized $36,000
