Lot 55

1795 Jefferson Head Cent S-80 R5- PCGS graded VF25. Variety with a Plain Edge. Dark steel and olive with lighter chocolate brown toning on the highpoints of the devices. Uniform very fine granularity covers most of the planchet but the highpoints are smooth. No verdigris and the only notable mark is a chip out of the rim over RT in LIBERTY (possibly as struck). The date is strong and the legends are complete and clear. A very nice example of this very rare type, apparently made by John Harper as a pattern cent. Called VF25 sharpness net F12 by Noyes and tied for CC#7 honors in his census, photo #60045. Bland says net F12 as well. The finest known is a burnished VF35 in the ANS Collection. Comes with a remarkable provenance that has been traced back well over a century. Pop 2; 2 finer, 1 in 30, 1 in 40. Estimate Value $150,000 - UP
