Lot 1111

1852 Pattern Gold Dollar. Copper-nickel, plain edge. Judd-140. Pollock-167. Low Rarity 7. PCGS graded Proof 66. CAC. PQ. A lovely example. As noted in Judd "This pair of dies was never intended for regular coinage, but was made to test the concept" It is interesting to note that several metallic planchets were tested to see how these would hold up as well, as these dies struck coins known in gold, silver, copper, copper-nickel and nickel. For the obverse the design consists of the letters U.S.A. at the top and date below, with the center dominated by a large perforation. The reverse has seven pairs of olive leaves with berries in a circle. This test piece was an important step in the development of the Gold dollar, lanched in 1849 for general circulation. Pop 1; the finest example graded at both services. (PCGS # 11589) Estimate Value $10,000 - UP
