Lot 450

1803 S-259 R4 Small Date, Large Fraction G4. Sharpness F12 or better but covered with uniform moderate to strong granularity. No marks or verdigris. Slightly glossy dark olive brown. The obverse is double struck with obvious doubling more than a millimeter wide along the profile from the forehead down to the bottom of the neck. The reverse is an incuse impression of the obverse and the doubling on that side is more subtle, clearest in the drapery lines. The impressions on both sides are centered on the planchet. Apparently this planchet was inserted into the coining chamber before the previously struck cent was ejected, and it was struck twice between the obverse die and the obverse of the previously struck cent. Another obvious mint error. Estimate Value $400 - UP
Ex R. Tettenhorst Collection 2018-Tettenhorst Estate.

Realized $1,260
