Islands off Thrace, Thasos. Silver Stater (7.65 g), ca. 480-463 BC. Satyr advancing right, carrying off protesting nymph. Reverse: Quadripartite incuse square. Le Rider 5; SNG Copenhagen 1010-1. Boldly struck in high relief. Wonderful style with all details sharp and well defined. Lightly toned. Rarely seen this choice. Superb Extremely Fine. Estimate Value $1,500 - 2,000
We note that this stater is slightly light in weight and may in fact be a fourrée (ancient plated forgery) but none of the usual signs are apparent.
