P.J Mêne Bronze and Antique Gilt Washed "Stag by a Tree Stump" Sculpture on Marble Base, Signed. After Pierre Jules Mêne (1810-1879.) One of the foremost animalier sculptors of the 19th Century, and achieved high distinction in the art of making small bronzes of domestic and wild animals. His most magnificent works were his stag elk bronzes. This majestic work we feel very strongly is not in any way a modern casting given the oxidized gilt patina (adding immeasurably to the appeal), the astonishing detail of his coat and that it not having a smooth and gleaming patina as recent recasts have. We find only one auction record of this work at Heathcote Ball auction house in Leicester, UK in 2001 and sold for 900 pounds in 2001. Stag measures 9¾ to tip of antlers x 8 x 4". Signed P.J. Mene and with no foundry mark. Estimate Value $750 - UP

Realized $480
