Mordecai, Alfred, Jr. -- Group of Ten $1000 General Mortgage Bonds of the Pennsylvania Canal Company. Pennsylvania. $1000 Issued 6% General Mortgage Bond, Black print on black border and blue under tint on large sized certificate, 1 page, folio., July 1, 1870.Image of boat moving down canal passing a little boy, Orange revenue stamp at left side. Some splits, VG-VF condition. Certificates are signed by Alfred Mordecai Jr (1840-1920), as Secretary. Mordecai was from a very prominent Philadelphia Jewish family (his father was Major Alfred Mordecai). He graduated from West Point in June 1861 and active as assistant Adjutant-General during the defense of Washington in August of 1861, He also participated in the battle of Bull Run in 1861. Documents are also signed by General Isaac Jones Wistar (1827-1905) President of the Company. At this time he was President of the Pennsylvania's Railroad Co. Estimate Value $500 - UP
