Lot 777

1871-CC. PCGS graded EF-45. CAC. It has been estimated by PCGS and CoinFacts that from the original mintage of over 17,000 pieces, perhaps 215 distinct 1871-CC double eagles exist today. The balance were likely melted or lost. Few of those known are as wholesome and smooth as the present coin, with natural golden copper hues on both sides, and light wear on the uppermost points of the design. After all 1871 is very early in the Carson City Mint's history, as it just opened for business in late 1869, with coinage starting in 1870. Local mines provided the silver and gold ore for coinage. From the number struck it is believed that only two coins can claim to be mint state at this point, the balalnce all circulated to varying degrees. If you have been searching for a high end choice XF 1871-CC double eagle then look no further than the present coin. A nice strike and lightly toned. Only 17,380 struck. Pop 48; 32 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 8961) Estimate Value $25,000 - 30,000

Realized $46,800
