1873. NGC graded MS-65. This is a stunning example of the first year of issue of the Trade dollar. These new coins were originally called "Commercial Dollars" and were authorized by the Act of February 12, 1873 and therein these were renamed Trade Dollars. These were intended to compete and circulate alongside with the Mexican silver peso in the Orient, widely used in that region. The vast majorty of 1873 dated Trade dollars from all mints ended up in China where they were assayed and blessed by the local merchants as having good silver and actually a tad more silver than the Peso. Hence few of this original issue date remained in the United States, and most of the coins that went to the Orient and survived at all show chop marks, which were imparted by local merchants to note their acceptance in trade.

This particular coin is one of the finer examples known today, and offers glistening frosty luster and a sharp strike throughout. Memorable quality like this is always hard to find, and worth the premium paid to capture it. Don't miss out if you are a serious specialist. Well struck and fully white. Pop 6; 2 finer in 66. Estimate Value $7,500 - 8,000
