Lot 290

1918-D, 8 over 7. NGC graded EF-45. Popular key date that has never turned up in large numbers, certainly far fewer than the number of collectors that desire an example of this famous overdate. The master hub was used to create an obverse die for a 1917 dated nickel, then a 1918 master hub was switched and the obverse die was struck again, creating this overwdate. Curiously this same sequence of events happened also on a single quarter dollar obverse in 1918 as well. The blundered die must have been noticed before production had gone too long, as not many were struck based on the sparse number known today. This one shows clean surfaces, natural nickel gray hues, and a good strike. All the features one hopes to find. Estimate Value $7,000 - 7,500
