California--19th Century Leaders Including Commodore Stockton, C.P. Huntington, Crocker, Stanford, Hearst, Sutro, Geary, Ralston. Commodore Robert Stockton (conquered California in 1846), holograph address panel free franked "R.F. Stockton" and addressed to H. Brierly in Clinton, CO; Leland Stanford (one of "The Big Four" investors in the Central Pacific Railroad), cut signature; C.P. Huntington (one of "The Big Four"), closing and signature from a letter (soiled); Charles Crocker (one of "The Big Four"), closing and signature from a letter, in a PSA/DNA holder; H.R. Crocker (established first printing and lithography plant in San Francisco). 1898 TLS; an 1878 Buy/Sell form from The Carson City Savings Bank; John W. Geary (first mayor of San Fran., governor of "Bleeding Kansas"), signed coupon for a San Francisco bond; William Chapman Ralston (founder of SF's Palace Hotel and The Bank of California), 1874 ALS to R.D. Atherton; George Hearst (Mining magnate), signature on 2x3¼" card (some staining); and Adolph H.J. Sutro (creator of Sutro Tunnel), 1892 Wells Fargo check signed. Twentieth century names in this lot are John Steven McGroarty, Julius Kahn, Eugene E. Schmitz, Alma de Bretteville Spreckels, Jesse M. Unruh, and Eric Hoffer. Items are overall very good.
