Early Supporters of a Jewish State, Including Cooper, Montefiore, and Numerous Rothschilds. Anthony Ashley Cooper, 7th Earl of Shaftesbury (1801-51), Christian English aristocrat and reformer who argued for a Jewish return--holograph signature ("Ashley") and address cut from an envelope; Sir Moses Haim Montefiore (1784-1885), Jewish philanthropist and stockbroker--holograph envelope; Alfred Dreyfus, French Jewish officer at the center of the Dreyfus Affair--two engraved cards acknowledging sympathy, one from Dreyfus and his wife (holograph note by Mrs. D.), and one issued by Dreyfus' family upon his death; Nathan Mayer Rothschild (1777-1836), Jewish German 2nd generation member of the banking dynasty--imperfect signature on an envelope; Lionel Nathan de Rothschild (1808-79), first Jew elected to the British House of Commons--cut signature; Baron Nathan Mayer Rothschild (1840-1915), Lionel's son and first Jew to sit in the House of Lords--cut signature; Walter Rothschild, 2nd Baron Rothschild (1868-1937), he was the recipient of the 1917 letter from Arthur Balfour setting out the Balfour Declaration--large signature cut from a letter; a 1920 toned document with signatures, among others, of Baron Edouard de Rothschild and Baron Edmond de Rothschild, each with the amount "100F" after the name, possibly for a charity or for a bet on a yacht competition; James A. de Rothschild (1878-1957), grandson of the founder of the French branch--cut signature; Joseph Chamberlain (1836-1914), British politician and Zionist sympathizer who offered a territory in East Africa (the Uganda Plan)--closing and signature cut from a letter; and Israel Zangwill (1864-1926), founder of the Jewish Territorial Organization--1922 TLS, in part, "The offer of Lower California by President Obregon already begins to interest the suffering Jews of Eastern Europe…" Housed in a black leather album and case.
