Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem Knight Commander Star. Rare and authentic 19th/20th century sterling silver and guilloché enamel Knight Commander with Star of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. It is a Roman Catholic order of knighthood under the protection of the Pope. It traces its roots to Duke Godfrey of Bouillon, principal leader of the First Crusade. In 1496, Pope Alexander VI created the office of Grand Master of the Order, and the office was vested in the papacy. The Pope is sovereign of the Order, and it enjoys the protection of the Holy See and has its legal seat at Vatican City. Few of these crosses are in general circulation.
Measures 3.25" diameter; weight: 92 grams. Both metal and enamel are in mint condition without any damage or repairs, with original patina. Estimate Value $800 - UP
