Original Watercolor, Gouache and Ink Illustration, 1896 Epsom Derby Winner, "Persimmon," Owned by Prince of Wales. A wonderful original illustrated work by C. Whitfield of the finish of the 1896 Epsom Derby which by all accounts one of the most exciting in its history. The horse owned by then Prince of Wales, Edward VII, Persimmon won by a neck over Mr. L de Rothschild's horse, St. Frusquin. Several C. Whitfields are recorded as artists in the late 19th Century and early 20th so we are not certain which one painted this work. The illustration is quite fine, with details of every spectator dressed in their finery and the drama of the horses crossing the finish line at full gallop. Wonderfully rendered. On board and measures 7½ x 9". Framed beautifully in gilt wood to 14½ x 16½". Very Fine condition a must for collectors of horse racing and 19th century British art. Estimate Value $600 - UP
