Lot 1842

1873 Pattern Trade Dollar. Silver, reeded edge. Judd-1322. Pollock-1465. PCGS graded Proof 65. Rarity 4. Pop 7; tied for the finest examples graded at PCGS. Wonderful rainbow toning of incredibly deep blue and russet toning which spans boths the obverse and reverse. The obverse depicts the regular dies of the Trade dollar adopted in 1873, while the reverse sports a tiny eagle with wings open but close to his body, clutching the olive branch in his right claw and trio of arrows in his left. The placement of legends is similar to those adopted for the regular issue Trade dollar in 1873. Although these were struck in fairly large numbers, this is likely because they were under strong consideration for adoption as the main Trade dollar design, but nevertheless, finding one this nice--and so exceptinally toned--remains a challenge. Destined for a quality conscious buyer and advanced collection (PCGS # 61608) Estimate Value $6,000 - 7,000
