Lot 1533

1877 Pattern Half Dollar. Silver, reeded edge. Judd-1504. Pollock-1658. NGC graded Proof 67. Lovely golden toning on both sides. Pop 1; tied with an NGC PF-67 Cameo as the finest graded example at both services and a Superb example. The only other known example from this die pairing is a distance Very Fine and cleaned example, which makes a total of 3 distinct pieces currently.

The obverse depicts the Morgan silver dollar head and design, but in slight miniature for a half dollar sized coin, with the date 1877 below. Otherwise these are the regular dies of the slightly larger silver dollar that was adopted in 1878. For the reverse this shows Morgan's "Shield Design" with an ornate design that includes a central standing eagle with claws holding an olive branch (right claw) and an arrow (left claw), placed over a central shield, surrounded by a circule inscribed IN GOD WE TRUST.with an ornamental olive wreath with fruit attached to the circle. The legend above states UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and below HALF DOLLAR. For all intents and purposes this is the only truly representative example of this pattern issue, as the other known coin is circulated and cleaned.
(PCGS # 61839) Estimate Value $35,000 - 40,000
