Lot 1226

1799. Large obverse stars. PCGS graded AU-58. PQ. A nice frosty example that offers a sharp strike and clean surfaces. Furthermore there are no deep or detracting adjustment marks, and these are frequently seen on these early eagles. The obverse design has a large head of Liberty, perhaps a bit too large as the engraver used the top of her cap as a dividing line between the stars, the word LIBERTY and the balance of the stars. In this case there are eight stars on the left, then the cap, then LIBERTY followed by five more stars with the date below the bust. The reverse is a nicely rendered addaptation of our Great Seal, and fit onto the round coin nicely with the large eagle and shield. An excellent example of this popular type coin. Only 37,449 struck, with 300 to 400 examples estimated to have survived according to PCGS Pop Report (PCGS # 8562) Estimate Value $20,000 - 25,000
