Lot 290

Quarter Dollar. 1815. NGC graded MS-66. Popular first year of John Reich's Capped Bust design. A superb gem example exhibiting a needle sharp strike, including full center points of every star, and adjustment-free surfaces on both sides. The pristine frosty mint surfaces are overlaid with a natural blending of russets and electric blue iridescense around the devices and perimeters. Pop of only 3 with none higher. PCGS has graded but 1 in MS-65 and none higher. Here is the coin for the perfectionist who demands only the finest.
It is interesting to note that much of this issue was actually struck in January 1816, this was due to the scarcity of bullion caused by the War of 1812. Less than 12 hours after this 1816 delivery, a fire broke out in the Mint and all production ceased until repairs could be made in late 1817. It should also be pointed out, that many of the high grade surviving specimens of 1815 contain the curios "E" or" L" counterstamp above the head. This example of course, is free from this impairment.
