Goldberg Coins and Collectibles

Sale 1

Lot 237

Seated Liberty Dime. 1848. NGC graded Proof 66. Absolute quality here, toned with deep blues and golds around the periphery, white at the centers from long, careful storage by collectors, similar on the reverse, but a bit lighter. Fabulous surfaces and a rarity which is difficult to overemphasize. Apparently only half dozen exist, Breen lists seven with two more reported, but some duplication is normal as individual coins appear then disappear into collections for decades. Furthermore, this particular coin is one of the very best, tied at Proof-66 with one other (possibly the same coin resubmitted?). Better than Eliasberg's at Proof-65. Struck during the haphazard years before Proof mintages were accurately recorded or even available to collectors, normally the few (if any) produced went to dignitaries or gifts to foreign political leaders, not to collectors. How this coin was preserved so perfectly is one of those numismatic mysteries, but here it is in all its near perfect glory. An outstanding opportunity for the advanced collector to acquire a real treasure.
