Lot 23

Cent. 1814. Sheldon-294, Rarity-1. Crosslet 4. PCGS graded MS-65. Brown. An important type coin in full gem condition. The classic head design was coined during the years 1808 through 1814, most of which were struck on poorly prepared planchets that tended to oxidize or "tone" more quickly than Large Cents produced either before or after this type. This fact is reflected in the Population Reports of the grading services. PCGS for it's 13 years of grading, has only graded "Brown" Mint State 1814s, there are no "Red" or even "Red and Brown" colored originals. Here then, is one of the very few true gems that remain for collectors. There is only a single coin graded higher, what must be a spectacular Mint State 67, and two coins graded Mint State 65 Brown in the current (March 1999) PCGS Population Report. The fields show wonderful cartwheel from the luster and a few hints of original mint surface remains in the protected areas, mostly on the reverse. What separates this coin from the many others, is the virtually flawless surfaces, mark free in fact, with only microscopic signs of contact. This is one of the very finest of its type in existence, and is stunning and desirable in every regard. A foremost challenge for collectors is to locate a Classic Head Large Cent in full gem condition, there just aren't enough to go around, so be sure to recognize this chance to lock one away.
