Sale 98

Lot 923

1795. Silver Plug. B-7, BB-18, Rarity 3. PCGS graded AU-50. Lovely even toning on both sides with the central silver plug clear on both sides. These "plugged" dollars were made in quite limited numbers in 1794 and 1795 (and a few half dollars from 1795 too), and it is believed that as each silver planchet was weighed o confirm the full required weight, if coming in below the allowable weight, a thick "silver plug" was put into a central hole drilled in the existing planchet in order to increase the weight to within the allowable range. Today the number of plugged examples is quite rare, encompassing several die pairings. A prize for the advanced specialist. Only 16,029 struck. Pop 4; 10 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 6854) Estimate Value $45,000 - 50,000
