Lot 467

1798 S-166 R1 Large 8, Style II Hair PCGS graded AU58. Frosty medium steel brown and chocolate. Satiny mint luster shows in the protected areas and this cent offers excellent eye appeal. Just a hint of friction on the highest point of the devices and a few small contact marks. A trio of dull, tiny ticks on the chin, a few more on the bust, and a rim nick over the E in STATES are the notable marks, but none is distracting. MDS, Breen state IV, with a small rim cud break over ST in STATES. The bust tip and the opposing area at F-A are softly struck, a result of the reverse die being rotated 35 degrees CCW relative to the normal head-to-foot die orientation. The die crack that arcs through the lower left part of the reverse is strong. Our grade is EF40. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 1 finer in 64 for the variety. Estimate Value $4,000 - UP
Ex Coin Galleries 2/1987:1091.
