Lot 401
1795 C-4 R3 Punctuated Date, Plain Edge PCGS graded AU53. Lustrous chocolate and steel brown with delicate splashes of reddish chocolate and olive on both sides. The fields are slightly reflective and underlying mint luster covers the reverse. The only notable mark is a shallow depression (probably pre-striking) in the unstruck portion of the planchet outside the dentils opposite the neck. Otherwise free of contact marks, only the usual tiny planchet flakes or chips showing on the portrait and center of the reverse where some of the normal planchet imperfections didn’t completely smooth out during the strike. Struck 5-10% off center to K-9. An outstanding example of an early mint error. Our grade is AU50. Plated on page 21 in the second edition of the Cohen book on the "Little Half Sisters." Weight 88.1 grains. Comes with a very nice provenance for a US Half Cent. The attribution and "Mint Error/Off-Center" status are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population for the variety (not error) is 0; 2 finer, 1 in 55, 1 in 63+.
