Lot 337

1837 N-12 R3 Head of 1838 PCGS graded MS65 Brown. Frosty bluish steel and light olive. The surfaces are satiny and nearly flawless. The best identifying marks are a dull, light diagonal nick midway between the tip of the nose and star 3 and a spot of slightly darker toning left of the base of the first S in STATES. Nicely struck MDS with microscopic radial die flowlines in the fields and thin rim cud breaks below the date to star 1. The repunching on the left top of the 8 is clear and the "Accessory E" stamped into the leaves below the E in AMERICA is sharp. A nice example of this interesting die variety. Our grade is MS62. Noyes says MS65 and tied for CC#1 honors, his photo #28382. The attribution and Naftzger-Heard provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 1 finer in 66 for the variety. PCGS #37141. Estimate Value $1,500 - UP
Ex Gordon J. Wrubel-R. E. Naftzger, Jr. (via Bill Noyes)-Tom Reynolds-Gene Heard Collection (includes the Naftzger collection envelope that indicates he acquired it from Wrubel in 1/1976).
