Lot 333

1835 N-5 R2 Small 8 & Stars PCGS graded MS65 Brown. Choice lustrous bluish steel brown and olive with mint red covering 10% of both sides. The surfaces are satiny and virtually flawless creating outstanding eye appeal. The best identifying marks, and they are barely visible under strong magnification, are a tiny planchet flake midway between the tip of the nose and the nostril (as struck) and a very faint hairline right of the E in ONE. MDS with fine die flowlines covering the fields. The line or die crack through the base of the 835 is now dulled a bit by the flowlines and die wear, but it has not grown (which suggests that this is a die scratch rather than a crack). Called MS63 and tied for CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #20860. Bland says MS60+ and tied for CC#9. Our grade is MS64. A beautiful cent that comes with a nice provenance. The attribution and Naftzger-Heard provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 1 finer in 66 for the variety. PCGS #37084. Estimate Value $4,000 - UP
