1797. Small eagle. BD-1, Rarity 5. NGC graded AU Details, Improperly Cleaned. Mostly untoned with a nice appearance. Only 3,615 struck with the Small Eagle reverse design, and from that beginning perhaps 60 are kown today. This coin offers strong definition on the devices and only minimal signs of circulation along with normal handling marks in the soft gold surfaces. There are a couple of trivial adjustment marks on the reverse, but they are not detracting. This is one of the most underrated of the early $10 gold pieces as collectors soon learn when trying to find a suitable example. When these rarities are offered, they tend to bring a strong price as demand is never satisfied.
