Lot 1281

1914. NGC graded Proof 67. Boldly struck and very nice for the grade. The color is the expected straw-gold shade on both sides and the surfaces are absolutely splendid. They are virtually perfect and free of any kind of distraction from handling. Incredible quality deserves a strong bid, as this is clearly one of the best of only 117 struck. Here is a stunning example of the Indian quarter eagle design by Bela Lyon Pratt. The actual model used by Pratt is not known for the Native American, nor the tribe from which he came. The designs for these quarter eagles were struck into the planchets, rather than struck up by the dies, a major innovation not seen in American coinage prior to these Pratt quarter and half eagles. This design is not only unusual, but highly regarded by numismatists and quite collectible today. Pop 13; 5 finer, 1 in 67+, 4 in 68. (PCGS # 7963) Estimate Value $30,000 - UP

Realized $39,950
