1796 C-1 R6 No Pole PCGS Genuine, Poor/Fair Details, Plugged. Sharpness perhaps Good-4 overall and better in a few areas, but the obverse fields were tooled and smoothed and a large (4-5 millimeter) hole was plugged in the field before the mouth. The plug is toned an obviously lighter brown color than the rest of the coin which is glossy chocolate brown and darker steel. There are several planchet voids on the reverse, but these mint-made defects are relatively insignificant compared to the plugged hole. And there are some positive attributes as well. The date is complete and easily readable with only the base of the 6 starting to fade away. LIBERTY, UNITED STATES, Ms Liberty, and the fraction are visible but most of the reverse legend is gone. Most of the ever-present bisecting die crack on the obverse has been smoothed away, but it is visible as a wave in the field even with the bottom of the cap, strongest near the dentils. This may be the worst known example of this extremely rare variety, but there aren't many from which to choose, especially if you don't want to spend "sports car money" to get one. Our grade is Basal State-1. The attribution is shown on the PCGS label.
