Lot 1494

1925 Stone Mountain Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-66 Star. Lovely light obverse rainbow toning. Boldly original detail includes underlying frosted luster throughout. Struck to raise funds for the Stone Mountain memorial, the equestrian figures on the obverse depict, respectively, General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson and General Robert e. Lee. The thirteen stars around allude to the thirteen seceding Southern states, not the original colonies. On the reverse, the inscription MEMORIAL TO THE VALOR OF THE SOLDIER OF THE SOUTH alludes to the Confederate troops. Net mintage was 1,310,000. A number of Stone Mountains were counterstamped with various state names and serial numbers by promoters of the issue; others reached circulation (PCGS # 9378) .
Estimated Value $500 - 550.

Realized $617
