1870. PCGS graded Proof 64 Deep Cameo. A glittering white beauty with deep mirrors throughout and a touch of tone just starting to form. Only 1,000 minted. Pursuant to the Act of March 3, 1865, the Silver Dollar was included among the other silver coins which had to bear the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. This modification succeeded the No Motto coins of 1840-65. The first Proof Seated Dollars sold to the public to carry the motto were issued in 1866. For such a large coin, injuries were common, leaving a large gap in available Proof 64 and better specimens. Most Proofs are Proof 60 to 63 or blemished with hairlines, marks, or signs of cleaning. This attractive Proof 64 displays beautiful deep cameo contrast between the mirror field and frosted devices. Pop 2; 4 finer, 3 in 65, 1 in 66 (PCGS # 97018) .
