Lot 1884

1907. High Relief, Roman Numerals, Wire Rim PCGS graded Genuine AU Details. Surfaces tooled. In the summer of 1907, Saint Gaudens, designer of the High Relief double eagle, who had been in failing health for some time, took a turn for the worse, and in August he died. Ironically, he never lived to see examples of his own Double Eagle in production. After President Theodore Roosevelt had been appeased by the striking of 11,250 High Relief coins, a difficult task due to the high relief complexities introduced when striking, the Mint obtained permission to revise its design, wherein the relief was lowered, the Roman numerals eliminated, and more familiar numeral punches used for the date (PCGS # 9135) .
Estimated Value $5,000 - 5,500.

Realized $5,290
