Lot 1932

1905. PCGS graded Proof 58. CAC Approved. Minor hairlines on both sides. Only 92 pieces struck. For mintages of Liberty double eagles at Philadelphia in the 20th century both Proof as well as business strikes, there is little middle ground; mintages are either million-plus, as is the case with the 1904 and 1907 issues, or lower six figures and below. With its mintage of 58,919 pieces business strikes and 92 Proofs, the 1905 is part of a trio of issues with five-figure production, along with the 1902 and 1906. One may surmise that the high production of double eagles Philadelphia coined in 1904 crowded out the possibilities for large mintages in the next two years.

Many Proof survivors from this issue come signs of handling, possibly from some time spent in circulation. It has been observed by collectors of the early part of the 20th century that some collectors were forced to spend their Proof gold coins during the troubles of the Great Depression. This likely accounts for many impaired Proofs one sees. A rich reward descends to the successful bidder on this Lot. The coin is remarkable in its clarity of detail and still shimmering Proof surface. Pop 1; 19 finer (PCGS # 9121) .
Estimated Value $5,000 - 5,500.
