1925-D. PCGS graded MS-65. Lovely golden colors. Struck with technical exactness throughout. With full splashing luster on, within, and around the devices.Pop 478; 34 finer, 4 in 65+, 30 in 66 (PCGS # 7949) .

Historic note: Uninformed opinion has it that most people during the early decades of the 20th Century, when America had a gold-backed money, never actually used or saw gold coins but instead paid with paper money or by check. This is partially true. But your cataloger has personal knowledge through an Uncle (b.1912, d.1997) that gold coins did indeed perform their function as money payment.

This uncle worked in a Detroit, Michigan bank in 1930 and 1931 as a low-level clerk and teller when in his late teens. By happenstance one of his weekly pay envelopes with the gold contents was retained by his mother and passed down to the cataloger’s mother, and then on to the cataloger. Pay for one week’s work was ten dollars. In the little craft paper envelope, a 1910 and a 1925-D Indian quarter eagle (Extremely Fine to About Uncirculated quality) along with a 1912 Canadian $5 gold (About Uncirculated quality). At the time (1912-14), Canada’s $5 and $10 gold pieces were struck on the same standard as their American counterparts. So it is no surprise that this young bank clerk might receive in his pay packet a Canadian $5 instead of an American $5. (Windsor, Ontario, Canada is across the river from Detroit, Michigan.).
Estimated Value $2,200 - 2,300.
This is part of the #3 ranked PCGS Registry Set.

Realized $2,300
