Lot 330

1848 Small Date Fantasy Cent Rarity-7-. PCGS graded AU-53. Slightly sharper with a few faint hairline scratches on the cheek, a light pinscratch high on the neck into the field close under the chin, and a disjointed one on the reverse from the dentils right of the second S in STATES down through the wreath and right side of the N in ONE to between the E & N in CENT. Only the scratch under the chin is visible to the unaided eye. Rather glossy medium brown with chocolate brown toning in protected areas. A large curved planchet clip reaches to near the base of the dentils from left of star 7 to right of star 8 and the opposing ones under the wreath ribbon. The planchet is slightly oversize at 30.0 millimeters and weighs a hefty 176.8 grains. Struck slightly off center to K-10. There is no trace of undertype or of multiple strikes. Our grade is net VF30, second finest of the 10-13 examples known of this extremely rare and popular privately struck "cent." Only 10 of those examples have been confirmed, and only two of those grade higher than F12 in the Noyes and Grellman census lists. The finest known piece, which is only marginally finer than this coin, was a PCGS graded AU55 (our grade net VF35) that we sold as lot #900 in our auction of the Ted Naftzger late date large cents on 7 September 2009. Howard Newcomb devoted a couple pages in his book on the series to the "Small Date" 1848 cent, and most of the top collections have contained at least one piece. The spectacular Holmes collection contains three examples, each with its own unique attributes. This one comes with a nice provenance, and its pedigree to the Dan Holmes Collection is noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 1 in AU55 for the variety at PCGS. DWH #2484 (PCGS # 403850) .
Estimated Value $4,000-UP.
