Lot 1511

1934-S Peace Dollar. PCGS graded MS-62. Key date. A white coin. Only a few bagmarks on the surface, the luster crisp and luminous. It may be difficult for today's buyers to believe, but the 1934-S was once considered to be a more common Peace Dollar in Mint State than, of all issues, the 1925. There was a lapse in production after 1928. This is illustrated in the listings in the Guide Book of United States Coins. Following the election of the Roosevelt administration, however, production resumed in 1934 (when silver dollars were struck at Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco) and again in 1935 (Philadelphia and San Francisco). Then it was decided to substitute paper money issues in the form of $1 Silver Certificates of the 1935 Series for public use to replace the more unwieldy heavy coins. The government earned more in seignorage this way (PCGS # 7377) .
Estimated Value $1,850 - 1,900.

Realized $2,185
